Savio AC is an athletics club which was founded by Fr Frank Clifton SDB and derives both its name and traditional yellow colour from Savio College, its home school. Fr Clifton was always keen to promote sports as a healthy way through which young people can grow, and it is with this in mind that he set up Savio AC. The club aims to provide its members with an opportunity to enjoy themselves in a competitive atmosphere, while fostering a friendly and familiar spirit. This is done through a holistic experience inspired by the Salesian ethos, based on the pillars of community, formation, joy and fulfilment.

The Savio AC family is nowadays driven by a committee of seven hardworking individuals who aspire to provide a better platform for our athletes in order to improve and grow as individuals. Having a mixture of parents, current athletes, Savio College past pupils and Salesians within this committee ensures that all aspects are taken care of.

Savio AC not only participates in a number of national athletic competitions, such as track and field events, cross country and road running, but it also organises a number of activities which are firmly established in the local athletics calendar. These include the ‘Run to Remember – Sav10k’ race, which is a challenging race taking place in the unique Dingli and Buskett surroundings, and the Triangular League, which is organised in collaboration with two other local athletics clubs, and provides an opportunity to instil in our athletes the right spirit in sports as from an early age. Savio AC also strives to help its athletes become honest and responsible citizens – in fact, during its annual Round Malta Relay, the club travels around the Maltese coast with the aim of collecting funds for those who are most in need.

Over the years, Savio AC has served as a stepping stone for local athletes to reach their potential, with some even representing our country abroad in prestigious competitions. However, the club is committed to remain at the forefront of the sport not only now, but also in future years. In light of this, in recent years the club has set up the ‘Front Runners’ group, which brings together a number of members over the age of sixteen with the aim of helping them to develop their leaderships skills, while also contributing towards the club itself. In fact, a number of members from this group have recently completed a coaching course organised by the MAAA, making Savio AC one of the clubs with the highest number of qualified coaches on the island. The recent plan for investment in athletics equipment is also a testament to the club’s willingness to grow and provide a unique opportunity for young people to reach their potential in the sport.
